At the request of Buda and within the framework of GONE WEST the world-famous Lebanese-American artist Walid Raad gets to work on the 'Great War' : Kicking the dead in 31 short episodes (or less or more) will be a report on how art and culture are affected by a history of violence, in the form of an exhibition ánd a performance.
That the relationship between culture and violence is at the centre of the artistic universe of Walid Raad already appeared from long-lasting projects such as Scratching on Things I Could Disavow and Sweet Talk : Commissions (Beirut). Also Kicking the dead will be such a (long) ongoing investigation.
Furthermore Raad is a many-sided man : he already had exhibitions at the Louvre and MOMA and rocked the cradle of the famous Atlas Group, a project that recorded the marks of the Lebanese civil wars and was recently chosen as one of the most influential thinkers of 2016 by the periodical Foreign Policy.
For Kicking the dead, he zooms in on the concepts of 'dead' and 'un-dead' spread by war but as well by museums. By means of the most divergent artefacts and motives he weaves a story that both deals with the waves of violence from the Middle East to the Westhoek and the foundation of new museums in the Arab world, such as the recently built branch of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi.
