Hate Radio

International Institute of Political Murder

Germany / Switzerland

Radio as a murderous machine. Before and during the Rwandese genocide of 1994, the radio station RTLM incited murder in no uncertain terms. The International Institute of Political Murder makes a reconstruction with Hate Radio. It puts survivors of the genocide on stage, reconstructs the radio station and makes the audience experience how murderous a usually good-natured medium like radio can be.

Four characters are on stage : three Hutu extremists and the white Italian-Belgian Georges Ruggiu. How does racism work ? How can words dehumanize a people ? An installation consisting of documents and testimonies gives the answer. The walls of the studio serve as projection screens for a selection of stories both from perpetrators and victims. In this way the audience comes face to face with the consequences of a racist ideology.

The international company The International Institute of Political Murder was set up at the end of 2007 in order to reinforce the exchange between theatre, visual art, film and historical reconstruction.

IIPM pays special attention to the exactitude of facts. That’s why all IIPM projects are based on extensive research in archives and interviews with witnesses.
